Champagne Supernova defeats Wonderwall! (51% - 48%)

The Contenders:

"Wonderwall" - Oasis

vs.

"Champagne Supernova" - Oasis

The Story:

This battle kicks off the first competition of this week's theme: two-hit wonders.

If a one-hit wonder is mostly unknown band that got lucky with one song and was never heard from again, then a two-hit wonder is a band that happened to do that twice without being noticed.

Case in point: I'm sure you know both of these songs. But did you know the name of the band that sang either song? And furthermore, did you realize that it was the same band?

To be honest, a lot of you are likely saying, "Actually, yes, I did know Oasis sang these songs." And that's why I like you, buddy. You know your '90s pop rock. To those pals, I would also make a small concession, which is that many people (mostly you guys) have probably heard a bunch of other Oasis songs. But really, were any of those nearly as popular as these two?

As for everyone else, maybe you didn't know these were Oasis songs! And you know what? That's OK too! What matters is that the songs are both really good. All I ask is that you vote for which one you think is better than the other. So, if you would, please?

Head Over Heels defeats Private Eyes! (51% - 48%)

The Contenders:

"Private Eyes" - Hall and Oates

vs.

"Head Over Heels" - Tears for Fears

The Story:

First off, click here if you want the original "Heads over Heels" video.

Now, to the battle. Tons of classics to choose from in this match-up. For Hall and Oates, there's "Maneater," "I Can't Go For That," and perhaps best of all, "Rich Girl."

On the Tears for Fears side, you have "Shout," "Mad World," and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." Pretty epic '80s match-up, you have to say.

As for this particular battle, I'll let the videos speak for themselves this week. Vote by song, vote by group, vote by hairstyle, whatever--just vote!

In Your Eyes defeats In The Air Tonight and That's All! (65% - 35% - 0%)

It's a Thursday Three-Way! Also, let's try embedding videos instead of doing links.

The Contenders:

That's All - Genesis

vs.

In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel

vs.

In The Air Tonight - Phil Collins

The Story:

Had trouble finding good videos today. "In Your Eyes" is there, and "In The Air Tonight" might not be what you expected but I think it's good enough. The "That's All" so-called "video" is boring, but I think the real one wouldn't have been much better. According to Wikipedia:

The ["That's All"] video depicts the band as homeless men playing cards and keeping warm at an open fire. It was the first time Genesis used director Jim Yukich for one of their promos.

If you're having trouble picking a song, I would ask you this: who would win in a fight between that gorilla, some poker-playing homeless dudes, and John Cusack holding a boom box?

Gotta be Johnnie C, right? Plus he's a Cubs fan.

Wanna Be Startin' vs. P.Y.T.

The Story:

I always associate these two songs with each other. They're both from Thriller, but overshadowed by the other three singles from the album, in my humble opinion.

P.Y.T.
was quoted by Ronald Reagan in a State of the Union address. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' refers to the subject of the song as a vegetable.

Interpret as you will.

The Contenders:

Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' - Michael Jackson

vs.

P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) - Michael Jackson

6.29.2009

Rock With You vs. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough

The Story:

With the passing of a musical icon, we're transforming this blog into a scientific tool. We'll be trying to determine the greatest Michael Jackson song of all time, based on the votes of my friends from Facebook and Twitter. Pure knowledge is happening right now.

I'm starting with a pair of songs that sound pretty similar. These songs are both from the album, Off the Wall, the first major contribution of Jackson's solo career. Let's try to figure out the best trax from that album, and we'll go from there.

(Note: Given Michael's immense popularity, none of the original music videos will be embeddable. Please click the links provided below to give the trax a listen.)

The Contenders:

Rock With You - Michael Jackson

Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough - Michael Jackson

Electric Feel defeats Satellite! (58% - 42%)

Here're a couple trax I heard in a restaurant I visited last night. Give 'em a listen and let me know what you like.

6.19.2009

Comfortably Numb defeats I Kissed A Girl! (72% - 27%)

I'm curious to see what happens here. Hopefully we get some votes. Don't ask me what drove me to set this one up. Because I've got nothing for you.

Anyways, let's vote.

6.18.2009

Don't Stop Believin' defeats Come Sail Away! (75% - 25%)

The Story:

Journey's #1 single of all time should be pretty clear. It's funny, because as far as I know it really only took over as of this decade. But these days,

EVERYONE'S LOVIN' THE "DON'T STOP BELIEVIN'".

(I prefer "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'", but I guess that's just the kind of guy that I am. Also I prefer shortenin' my gerunds. Deal with it.)

On the other hand, I think most people would say "Mr. Roboto" is, like, the Styx song. But I think a lot of its charm comes from the fact that it's about a robot, rather than it being a rockin' song.

Then there's "Come Sail Away", an epic rock ballad that rivals "Don't Stop Believin'". It's a little long, and the intro takes a while to get through, but some might say the beginning of "DSB" drags as well.

So which is better? "Don't Stop Believin'", or "Come Sail Away"?

Vote on the right blah blah blah.

The Contenders:

"Don't Stop Believin'" - Journey

vs.

"Come Sail Away" - Styx

6.15.2009

Another Dumb Blonde vs. the world

The Contender:

The Story:

This isn't a battle between two songs--this is a battle between you and yourself.

If you remember this song, you win.

If not, welcome to real life.

LIVE IT! HOKU!!!

6.12.2009

The Middle defeats Sweetness! (80% - 20%)

The Contenders:

"The Middle" - Jimmy Eat World

vs.

"Sweetness" - Jimmy Eat World

The Story:

It's unfortunate, but Jimmy Eat World is a really fine example of a band with two uber-popular songs that never manages to crack the radio again afterward.

It's unfortunate because they have a ton of songs that are really, really good, including but not limited to:

- "If You Don't, Don't"
- "For Me This Is Heaven"
- "The Authority Song"
- "Bleed American"

Given how many sweet trax these guys have, how is it that they aren't more popular?

I'll tell you why. It's that damned Mr. Feeny stealing everyone's thunder again.

Put yourself in the shoes of a teenager living in the late '90s. You went out and bought "Clarity", threw it on the old record player, and let it play. Your friends were all really impressed with you: "Oh man, I've never heard of this band before! They MUST be good!" (Did I mention your friends were all hipsters that live for Indie Rock Battles?)

They ask you, "What band is this?" And you tell them, "It's Jimmy Eat World!" And they're all like, "Ohh, damn, that's too bad."

They say, "Unfortunately, I'm already obsessed with 'Boy Meets World', and it wouldn't be fair to my brain to like both of those things."

My research shows that Boy Meets World was in its final season in 1999, when Jimmy Eat World's first CD came out. How confusing would that have been for a twelve year old (1999 - 1987 = 12) to try to enjoy a television show, as well as a band with a very similar name? I know *I* couldn't have handled it, that's for sure.

That show was pretty good, though.

The Way... wins! (56% - 23% - 20%)

The Contenders:

"The Way" - Fastball

vs.

"Out Of My Head" - Fastball

vs.

"You're An Ocean" - Fastball

The Story:

I'm still feeling kinda sick (read: unfunny), but I had this "three-hit wonder" in mind for last Thursday, so I'm gonna go ahead and throw it out there for today.

I love "You're An Ocean" personally, but I wouldn't bet any money on this battle because any of the three could win.

Cheers, mates! Vote on the right!

6.03.2009

Peaches defeats Lump! (67% - 33%)

The Contenders:

"Lump" - The Presidents of the United States of America

vs.

"Peaches" - The Presidents of the United States of America

(featuring a ninja fight at 2:30!)

The Story:

Today we have another variation on yesterday's theme of, "How did this stuff get on the radio?"

"Lump" I guess is pretty catchy. But it's weird, man! Totally weird! And speaking of weird--"Peaches"? Really? I wouldn't have ever associated moving to the country with eating lots of peaches, but I guess it makes sense. And if it didn't before, it definitely does now.

Of course, these songs aren't popular because they're at all good. It's because they have one-word titles. This strategy is much less popular in music than it is in television.

I mean, think about it. Think of the names of your all-time favorite TV shows for a minute.

Lost. Heroes. Friends. House. Scrubs. Seinfeld. Frasier.

Cops. Dateline. Guts. Legendsofthehiddentemple.

Maybe all you have to do to make your song or show famous is give it a one-word title.

Sounds like a conspiracy, if you ask me.

At any rate, vote on the right!

6.02.2009

Whenever, Wherever defeats Hips Don't Lie! (72% - 27%)

The Contenders:

"Whenever, Wherever" - Shakira

vs.

"Hips Don't Lie" - Shakira

The Story:

In a straw poll of various so-called "readers," I found that "Underneath Your Clothes" is a strong candidate to turn Shakira from a two-hit wonder into a three-hit wonder. But did anyone even like that song?

That's the funny thing about the radio. Sometimes, some really shitty songs become extremely popular. I find myself asking myself: Self, who likes these shitty songs?

In an attempt to think of one such song, I started chatting about the idea with a friend. At the same time, I started checking Hot 100 charts for a stand-out candidate for "Shittiest Song That Got An Unfathomable Amount of Play Time On The Radio Considering How Shitty It Was."

As soon as I settled on a band, I received this message, solidifying my selection:

Chat friend: "anything by nickelback."

God, doesn't Nickelback suck? There's even a story on NPR about how hard Nickelback sucks. How are they still around? Who listens to them?

On the other hand, it makes perfect sense that lots of people listen to Shakira. She's hot, and people will listen to attractive people no matter what the sound like.

Should you vote for the song with the music video that makes Shakira seem hotter? Maybe.

Vote on the right!

5.29.2009

Dick In A Box defeats Too Many Dicks! (64% - 36%)

The Contenders:

"Too Many Dicks" - Bret & Jemaine

vs.

"Dick In A Box" - Andy & Justin

The Story:

We've had a lot of epic battles before: Billy Joel vs. Elton John, Whitney vs. Mariah, Dan Akroyd vs. Tom Cruise.

Today, we're turning the speakers up to eleven.

Everyone's seen "Dick In A Box" and everyone loves it. I think "Motherlover" might have been better, but Andy and Justin said it themselves in that video: "[Motherlover] is the second best idea that we eeever haaad!"

On the other hand, maybe I'm mistaken, but I think "Flight of the Conchords" is one of the most underrated shows on television. It's like "The Wire," in that everyone that's seen FOTC loves it, except no one's really bugging you about watching it (top middle sign).

This is a good match-up because the songs are both about dicks. Dicks are funny! Haha, dicks!

I'm going to leave this poll open all weekend, for two reasons. First, I think this match-up deserves vigorous discourse and debate. These duos are both very funny, in very different ways.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, I want to try to boost the vote totals for once. We haven't yet broken 30, but maybe 50 or so people have an opinion on this one. If you have a friend that loves dicks in boxes or on dance floors, tell them to vote!

So, yeah! Vote on the right!

5.28.2009

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger... wins! (52% - 31% - 15%)

Thursday Three-Way!

The Contenders:

"Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" - Daft Punk

vs.

"Seven Nation Army" - The White Stripes

vs.

"Lex" - Ratatat

The Story:

No jokes about how Tom Cruise is crazy today; just three songs from cool duos that I like. I think they match up well against each other, too. None of the videos are particularly fantastic, although the hands thing has 30 million views, and the White Stripes video is interesting. More importantly, this is music that I think is good.

If you hear something new that you like, let me know (via e-mail, comment, whatever) and maybe I can help you add some new music to your library.

Enjoy listening, and vote!

5.27.2009

Sweet Home Chicago defeats You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'! (54% - 45%)

The Contenders:

"Sweet Home Chicago" - The Blues Brothers

vs.

"You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" - Goose and Mav?

The Story:

This battle pits two of my favorite things against one another--the Ideal Representatives of the City of Chicago versus pre-insanity Tom Cruise.

It's hard to define the parameters of this vote. Are we voting on song? I think they're both OK.

The video? Eh, both are fine.

The movies? They're both solid.

What about the actors?

Wasn't Goose in ER? That show was pretty good. Lots of people enjoyed it.

Belushi has a brother in a show called "According to Jim." That show sucks. Bad Belushis. Minus a billion!

Tom Cruise was in Top Gun, and Risky Business, and A Few Good Men. But he also jumped on a couch on Oprah. Plus zero.

And that leaves us with Dan Akroyd. He did lots of funny stuff. Hey, that reminds me.

I'm gonna go order a Bass-O-Matic now. Vote on the right, please!

5.25.2009

Hey Ya! defeats Still D.R.E.! (70% - 30%)

The Contenders:

"Hey Ya!" - Outkast

vs.

"Still D.R.E." - Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg

The Story:

We're kicking off "Duos Week" (kudos to Augie) with the blog's maiden voyage into the hip hop realm.

I think it's really great having a web page load with Charlie Brown hanging out right above a picture of Snoop glaring into your soul. I'd have loved to embed the original Outkast video, but the record company won't let me (fuck the man!), so I'll just have to link you to that one instead.

In this particular battle, I fully expect Dre and Snoop to clean up shop. But you have to give credit where credit is due.

Outkast put together a really original sound that brought pop and hip hop together like never before. It's catchy, it's interesting, it's unique. And it's got one-liners that will stick around for a long time.

To this day, I myself continue to shake it like Polaroid picture. I am glad to have been made aware of the fact that it is cooler than cool to be ice cold.

Both good songs; wouldn't be surprised to see this one go either way.

Vote on the right, please.

Weekend Update: Mulligan!

The blowout of the week happened yesterday. I really thought "Senorita" was a good song. Apparently, it is not. To make up for my blogging mistake, I give you this mini-battle for Saturday.

The Contenders:

"Tearin' Up My Heart" - NSYNC

vs.

"Sexyback" - Justin Timberlake

(I took this video down because it was ugly and kept playing automatically whenever you visit the site which I thought was annoying.)

Vote on the right if you feel so inclined.

5.22.2009

Tearin' Up My Heart defeats Senorita! (75% - 25%)

The Contenders:

Senorita - Justin Timberlake

vs.

Tearin' Up My Heart - NSYNC

The Story:

Before Justin Timberlake was having sex with everyone's moms, he was having sex with their 14-year old daughters.

Frankly, can you blame any of them?

It's only a matter of time before Justin completely takes over every media outlet. We may as well accept his storied past, and possibly even sing along with "Tearin' Up My Heart" at work. It just feels so right, you know? May as well do it.

Layla defeats Sunshine Of Your Love! (70% - 30%)

The Contenders:

Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream (click link for video!)

vs.

Layla - Eric Clapton (click link for video!)

The Story:

One of these songs is on Guitar Hero 3, and the other is not.

Also, one time I had a friend with a girlfriend named Layla. Whenever I saw her, I would say to her, "Hey, you've got me on my knees, Layla!" And I would think to myself, "Man, look at you, guy! You're so clever! I bet she's never heard THAT one before!" But looking back, it's pretty obvious that she had DEFINITELY heard that one before. Furthermore, not only had she likely heard it before, she probably heard that joke every day of every year of her life.

Sorry about that, Layla.
