Champagne Supernova defeats Wonderwall! (51% - 48%)

The Contenders:

"Wonderwall" - Oasis

vs.

"Champagne Supernova" - Oasis

The Story:

This battle kicks off the first competition of this week's theme: two-hit wonders.

If a one-hit wonder is mostly unknown band that got lucky with one song and was never heard from again, then a two-hit wonder is a band that happened to do that twice without being noticed.

Case in point: I'm sure you know both of these songs. But did you know the name of the band that sang either song? And furthermore, did you realize that it was the same band?

To be honest, a lot of you are likely saying, "Actually, yes, I did know Oasis sang these songs." And that's why I like you, buddy. You know your '90s pop rock. To those pals, I would also make a small concession, which is that many people (mostly you guys) have probably heard a bunch of other Oasis songs. But really, were any of those nearly as popular as these two?

As for everyone else, maybe you didn't know these were Oasis songs! And you know what? That's OK too! What matters is that the songs are both really good. All I ask is that you vote for which one you think is better than the other. So, if you would, please?

Head Over Heels defeats Private Eyes! (51% - 48%)

The Contenders:

"Private Eyes" - Hall and Oates

vs.

"Head Over Heels" - Tears for Fears

The Story:

First off, click here if you want the original "Heads over Heels" video.

Now, to the battle. Tons of classics to choose from in this match-up. For Hall and Oates, there's "Maneater," "I Can't Go For That," and perhaps best of all, "Rich Girl."

On the Tears for Fears side, you have "Shout," "Mad World," and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." Pretty epic '80s match-up, you have to say.

As for this particular battle, I'll let the videos speak for themselves this week. Vote by song, vote by group, vote by hairstyle, whatever--just vote!

In Your Eyes defeats In The Air Tonight and That's All! (65% - 35% - 0%)

It's a Thursday Three-Way! Also, let's try embedding videos instead of doing links.

The Contenders:

That's All - Genesis

vs.

In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel

vs.

In The Air Tonight - Phil Collins

The Story:

Had trouble finding good videos today. "In Your Eyes" is there, and "In The Air Tonight" might not be what you expected but I think it's good enough. The "That's All" so-called "video" is boring, but I think the real one wouldn't have been much better. According to Wikipedia:

The ["That's All"] video depicts the band as homeless men playing cards and keeping warm at an open fire. It was the first time Genesis used director Jim Yukich for one of their promos.

If you're having trouble picking a song, I would ask you this: who would win in a fight between that gorilla, some poker-playing homeless dudes, and John Cusack holding a boom box?

Gotta be Johnnie C, right? Plus he's a Cubs fan.

Wanna Be Startin' vs. P.Y.T.

The Story:

I always associate these two songs with each other. They're both from Thriller, but overshadowed by the other three singles from the album, in my humble opinion.

P.Y.T.
was quoted by Ronald Reagan in a State of the Union address. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' refers to the subject of the song as a vegetable.

Interpret as you will.

The Contenders:

Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' - Michael Jackson

vs.

P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) - Michael Jackson

Rock With You vs. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough

The Story:

With the passing of a musical icon, we're transforming this blog into a scientific tool. We'll be trying to determine the greatest Michael Jackson song of all time, based on the votes of my friends from Facebook and Twitter. Pure knowledge is happening right now.

I'm starting with a pair of songs that sound pretty similar. These songs are both from the album, Off the Wall, the first major contribution of Jackson's solo career. Let's try to figure out the best trax from that album, and we'll go from there.

(Note: Given Michael's immense popularity, none of the original music videos will be embeddable. Please click the links provided below to give the trax a listen.)

The Contenders:

Rock With You - Michael Jackson

Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough - Michael Jackson

Electric Feel defeats Satellite! (58% - 42%)

Here're a couple trax I heard in a restaurant I visited last night. Give 'em a listen and let me know what you like.

Comfortably Numb defeats I Kissed A Girl! (72% - 27%)

I'm curious to see what happens here. Hopefully we get some votes. Don't ask me what drove me to set this one up. Because I've got nothing for you.

Anyways, let's vote.
